What are the issues and challenges facing ‘Generation Rent’?

Where do young adults stand on the issue of homeownership?

With declining pension pots and an ageing population, how do young Brits feel about their financial future?

These are some of the questions that are being asked by the Wealth Gap Youth project: a new study that’s exploring young people’s housing and financial opportunities in the UK.

Run by researchers at the University of St Andrews as part of the Mind the (Housing) Wealth Gap project, the aim of the study is to get young adults’ views on the important factors that help or hinder their housing choices and financial welfare. We also want to get an idea of how the expectations and experiences of under-35s might be different, depending on where people are living and what resources they have access to.

What the study involves

Eligible participants will have the choice of taking part in either: an anonymous online focus group (chat room discussion) or a one-to-one interview via phone or Skype.

Through the focus groups and interviews, we will be asking young adults to share their views on a range of issues, including:

  • What are the key things that young people want from their housing, and what are the factors that help or hinder their housing options;
  • How do young adults feel about getting financial support, gifts and other help from family members when it comes to meeting living costs or getting a house?
  • How do young adults feel they’re faring in terms of their opportunities and prospects, and how do they feel this compares to when their parents were young?

£10 shopping voucher for taking part

As a thank you for taking part, all participants will receive a £10 love2shop voucher.

Who we’re looking for

To get a diverse range of perspectives across the UK, we are seeking the participation of 18-35 year olds who live in the following locations:

  • In Scotland: North Lanarkshire, City of Edinburgh and Scottish Borders.
  • In England:  Surrey, Sheffield and Cornwall.
  • In Wales: Merthyr Tydfl and Gwynedd.
  • In Northern Ireland: Belfast and Ballymena.
